The Crossroads of Hintonburg

The Crossroads of Hintonburg is the 2019 GOHBA award winner for multi-unit custom urban homes. It's prominently located on a difficult and untypical site. It sets a bold precedent for residential intensification. It contributes four strikingly elegant ground oriented units on a very small lot within a diverse and evolving urban neighbourhood. As an example of 'Missing Middle' architecture, it is a unique and important building in Ottawa.

This multi-unit home occupies an oddly skewed lot of only 4400sq.ft. that is located at a highly visible, pedestrian and vehicular intersection. Four townhouse style units wrap the corner with different architectural expressions designed to create two unique facades. Both street frontages are animated with doors, windows, porches and balconies. All units have ground floor dens or studies, almost all with windows to the street. Zoning permits the operation of small commercial activities out of these ground floor rooms, so their proximity to the sidewalk is a plus. All units have individual garage parking. Living levels are located on the second floor in order to allow a little distance and privacy from the street. Third floor bedrooms are bright and glassy. Many interior spaces have angled walls, some dramatically emphasizing the corner, some adding interest and delight to living spaces. The building was designed to zoning compliance but was subject to an extremely complex set of regulations. The complexity and constraints of the site and the city regulations inspired the designer to find unique architectural solutions, not only meeting the builder's needs, but producing a celebration of angles and complex geometry, a striking and lyrical architectural expression.

The Crossroads of Hintonburg provides four unique and distinctive 2+ and 3+ bedroom freehold homes designed with contemporary architecture while respecting traditional design references. A mix of exterior finishes, including brick, compliment a neighbourhood that is in transition, while providing homeowners an enduring, stylish, and practical lifestyle accommodation.
